Why studs are important for heavy items
Studs are the framework in your walls and the strongest part for securing heavy items. Hanging heavy objects on drywall without anchoring them in studs can lead to damage to the wall and potentially cause the item to fall.

- Appropriate anchors and screws (if studs aren’t in the desired location)
Finding the studs
Run a stud finder along the wall where you wish to hang your item. Most stud finders light up or beep when they cross a stud. Others, like Walabot DIY 2, show you the exact location of a stud on your phone screen. It even displays the center of the stud, so that you don't drill into the edge, which can compromise the strength of the mounting. Once you've pinpointed your stud, mark the edges with a pencil for reference.
Preparing to hang
Measure and mark the desired height for your artwork or mirror. Use a level to ensure that your marks are even and straight.
Drilling and hanging
- Drilling: If your hanging points align with a stud, drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than your screw or hanging hardware.
- Using anchors: If there’s no stud where you need to hang your item, use a heavy-duty drywall anchor rated for the weight of your piece.
- Securing the item: Once your holes are drilled, or your anchors are in place, attach your hanging hardware, and carefully hang your item. Use a level to make sure it's straight.
