Advanced Tips For Using Walabot DIY

Tutorial Length - 8 minutes

How to Find Studs in Walls

Detect studs and find their center

  • Hold the Walabot DIY against the wall, and press 'Start Scan' moving the Walabot DIY in large circular motions to calibrate it.
  • Begin with Pan Mode to get a panoramic view of the wall, and a basic overview of where the studs are.
  • Switch to Images Mode for a closer look. If a stud was found, you'll see a stud graphic on your phone.
  • To find the stud's center, switch to Expert Mode. Move the Walabot DIY slowly over the stud, and adjust the intensity bar if necessary.
  • Make sure the image is centered, then mark the center of the stud on your wall.

Detecting anomalies

Find intersecting objects and recessed wires

  • In Images Mode you can only see one object at a time.
  • When two objects are close together, intersect, or have a curving path (like a bending pipe), you may get readings that flicker onscreen. You may also get a message 'Nearby objects detected'.
  • To get a better understanding of what's happening, switch to Expert Mode. You'll now be able to see the outline of both objects, identify the intersection point, and follow their paths.
  • Similarly, if you're following a wire in Images Mode and the wire disappears, switch to Expert Mode. If you see that the color starts to fade, the device is indicating that there is a recessed wire.

Advanced detection

Tips for detecting pipes and wires

  • In Images Mode, Walabot DIY will not show two images onscreen at the same time. You may get a message 'Nearby objects detected' or your image will flicker onscreen.
  • Move the Walabot DIY around in a wider area to determine if there is a second object.
  • If you're following the path of a pipe or wire which seem to curve, rotate your phone and keep it parallel with the pipe or wire as you continue to scan, as shown in the video.
  • To get a better understanding of what's happening, or more accurately track a curved pipe or wire, switch to Expert Mode.

Lath and plaster

Finding studs in lath and plaster using the walabot DIY plus

  • Lath and plaster differs from drywall:
    1. Studs can be placed on edge or flat.
    2. Horizontal laths fill the whole wall.
  • Set up: Connect and calibrate your device, select plaster, start scanning, and you will see a red image.
  • To detect studs:
    1. Move the Walabot DIY Plus from left to right in order to find the object.
    2. Find the right level of intensity of the image to suit your project's needs.
    3. Move the device up and down to make sure you have a continuous signal. This indicates that you have found a stud or pipe.
  • In order to verify that you have found a stud: look for a repeating pattern of images, usually every 16 inches apart.
